My Food Storage Deals: A few voices of warning...

A few voices of warning...

>> Wednesday, November 12, 2008

Here are a few thought provoking quotes I ran across tonight on a great blog (http://www.preparetodaynewsletter.blogspot.com/) I thought I would share. I don't post these to scare anyone, or to cause fear, just to help us realize we have been admonished to be prepared and it is our chance to listen and follow the prophets--and be blessed ;)

"Should the Lord decide at this time to cleanse the Church--and the need for that cleansing seems to be increasing--a famine in this land of one year's duration could wipe out a large percentage of slothful members, including some ward and stake officers. Yet we cannot say we have not been warned." (Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, p.265)

"Too often we bask in our comfortable complacency and rationalize that the ravages of war, economic disaster, famine, and earthquake cannot happen here. Those who believe this are either not acquainted with the revelations of the Lord, or they do not believe them. Those who smugly think these calamities will not happen, that they somehow will be set aside because of the righteousness of the Saints, are deceived and will rue the day they harbored such a delusion." (Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, p.265)

Roger K. Young said, "The Lord has warned and forewarned us against a day of great tribulation and given us counsel, through His servants, on how we can be prepared for these difficult times. Have we heeded His counsel? It is hard for me to understand why or how so many good and wonderful people can discount what the prophets have said, again, and again, and concerning what will suddenly happen to the world in the future. President Benson said: "The revelation to produce and store food may be as essential to our temporal welfare today as boarding the ark was to the people in the days of Noah." (CR October 1980, Ensign 10 [November 1980]: 33.) Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, p.266)

I can understand stocking up on food when you get a good deal. I even understand having enough food in case of an emergency. But, to keep a year’s worth of canned and boxed food seems extreme.

I’ve become increasingly aware of eating well and living a healthy lifestyle. I eat much more fresh foods than canned and boxed. I don’t want all the chemicals in prepared foods. Even though I eat well, I take lots of vitamins. The FDA agrees that the food we eat today doesn’t have all the nutrition we need. A lot of that is processed out, especially in things like white flour and sugar.

Wouldn’t it be healthier to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, cut back on the processed foods and chemicals, and take a better vitamin than what Costco sells? Our bodies understand real food, but don’t know what to do with chemically processed food and synthetic vitamins.

So, if you’re not getting the nutrition from your food, and you’re not getting it from your vitamins, how do you stay healthy? Your body will do whatever it can to get the nutrients it needs. For instance, every day you don’t eat enough calcium, your body will take it from your bones. Eventually, you’re in a weakened condition and susceptible to illness and diseases.

I wish I would have been aware of this years ago. But, I can’t go back – Only forward. After 4 years, I see a big difference in my health. I wish you and your family a healthy, happy and prosperous life, too.

Excellent post and warning.
I need that kick-in-the-pants occasionally.
And regarding "fresh" foods... studies show that quite often, the produce in grocery stores was picked so long ago and has lost so much nutritional value in the transportation process that they aren't half as beneficial as canned.
FROZEN produce can often be the best choice - it is flash frozen immediately after being picked, thus holding in the nutrients.
And regarding the FDA... it's made up of a bunch of lawyers and government representations whose main objective is not to get sued.
But the POINT of this post is to be prepared for EMERGENCIES. Of course it's better to eat fresh on a daily basis. But what happens if a natural disaster hits? Bye-bye fresh foods... and you'll be more than happy to eat canned-ANYTHING as opposed to starving.

You’re absolutely right about fresh produce. It’s often picked long before it’s ripe. And it can be several days before it reaches the store. I buy most of my fresh produce from a local produce store. A lot of it is locally grown in season. It’s not organic, but that’s another issue.

I also buy frozen fruits and vegetables, but worry that they add chemicals that aren’t required to be listed on the label.

I understand preparing for an emergency. But, if you stock a year’s worth of boxed and canned food and keep eating the oldest, you may be sacrificing your long term health with all the salt, sugar, white flour, preservatives, hydrogenated oils and food coloring.

Mom always says “Everything in moderation.” Maybe keep a little emergency food, eat healthy with fresh and frozen produce and take your vitamins. No matter how well – or poorly – you eat, you need the vitamins. And if they’re good ones, they’ll really help maintain your health.
